GROUPS OF SUNSPOTS.

INCREASED SOLAR ACTIVITY

WELLINGTON OBSERVATIONS. (By. Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. Greatly increased solar activity is reported by Mr. G. V. Hudson, of Karori, who states that there is a very extensive group of sunspots, 130,000 mile& long and 50,000 wide, visible on the sun's western hemisphere. For the next two days at least this gigantic group should be clearly visible to the eye provided care is taken to look through smoked j or coloured glass. The largest spot of-the group measures about 50,000 miles by 40,000 miles. Jx; is surrounded by a very large irregular umbra, and traversed by several incom' plete bridges. There are two other very large spots in this group and mam smaller ones. Another extensive group of spots 80,000 miles long, and two smaller groups, are visible on the eastern hemisphere.
