A WATERWAY.
From tlie Auckland side a ■waterway 1 could be cheaply made into the Manukau. Dredging would soon do it. I see thousands of acre along tlie Waikato wasted when by using the unemployed groins made of wire and stone would keep the river in a restricted bed ana allow the reclamation of those thousands o_ acres; then if below Tuakau and between i and the Waikato Heads a canal were dredge through swamp land a cheap haulage f0 heavy goods wuld be provided, such as Em®' stone and artificial manures, etc., right low* the centre of the island and would by means bring about a closer connection between Auckland and the territory right up Hamilton and Cambridge. Would BO this be better than degrading men out o •work by tinkering with playgrounds, V 3 * ' and cutting blades of grass off footpaths, etc-, I am told that connecting Auckland by w® _ way with the Manukau would bring the twelve hours nearer to Sydney. Persona I do 1 not think this of much account, but * have known business men gamble all . and then growl because the train did not leahalf an hour earlier so that their mail v ° reach Wellington a shade sooner, when it •would not matter- if tlie letters ® " i for,a-.-week.
