Writing of the leather and hides market in, Britain as at January 10, a correspondent of "The Times" says:— "A rather steadier tone was apparent at the auctions for hides and calf skins held at Manchester this week, the only alteration in regard to ox and heifers being a reduction of Vsd per lb on the two top wjeights in both the clear and warbled classes. Both classes of cows in the GOIb and up weight were %d per lb dearer, while bulls and calf skins made last | week's prices. Supplies coming into the I markets are not large for the time of the I year, and this fact probably accounts for I the steadiness. Although the actual turnj over in foreign hides shows no appreciable improvement a better tone pervades the market, and hopes are entertained that there will be an expansion in the demand. Already there are signs of greater interest in hides, particularly at certain centres of origin; for instance, during the past week both European countries and the United States of America have been interested in the frigorifico market, and the business reported has amounted'to a fair aggregate. On the other hand several other producing centres are unable to announce any improvement in turnover."
