DRIED FRUIT PRICES.
LOW AUSTRALIAN QUOTATIONS
Quotations listed for new season's dried tree fruits are the lowest on record, states the "Melbourne Argus," and represent a substantial decrease in comparison with those of last season. Four-crown apricots are 3d a lb cheaper, three-crown 2%d, and other grades from Id to 2d cheaper. Peaches are about 2}4d a lb lower in price. The Dried Fruits Association has adopted a bold course in making such heavy reductions, but the low prices listed will probably be of better service to growers than prices similar to those of last season. Dried fruit has been losing in popularity recently, but there should be a stronger demand for it in view of the depression. Fruit canneries are not processing much fruit this season, and growers will probably dry a larger proportion of their crops than usual. The -supply will therefore be large, and low prices will be needed- to stimulate consumption. The action of the association may encourage growers to. handle surplus fruit in this way and thus avoid some of the fruit wastage which is threatened.
