BENEFIT CONCERTS.
TOWN HALL FUNCTION,
£140 FOR MAYOR'S FUND.
j The sum of about £140 for the Mayor's Fund was raised at a benelit concert held in the Town Hall on Saturday evening, under the supervision of Mr. R. W. Strong and Mr. Colin Muston, musical director. The items were of a very high standard throughout. Foremost en the programme was the playing of Handel's ''Largo" by .120 violinists, with harp, organ and piano accompaniment. Songs were contributed by Mr. Ernest Snell, who sang "The Toreador's Song" ("Carmen"); "My Dearest Heart" (Sullivan), by Miss Mollie Atkinson; "Crucifixus" (Faure), by Signor Costantini and Mr. Gordon Fagan;, Arne"s "The Lass with a Delicate Air," by Desmond Casey, the boy soprano; "The Lost Chrord" (Sullivan), by Madame Irene Ainsley; "West Country Lad" (German), by Mr. Len Barnes; "The Flower" (Schubert), by Miss Sarah Stacpoole and Mr. F. Sutherland; "Musica Probita" (Gastaldonj, by Mr. Ralph Eskrigge; "The Gypsy and the Bird" (Benedict), by Miss V. McLeod; "The Enchanted Hour" (Halm) and "Requiem" (Homer), by Miss Mina Caldow; "Waiata Maori" (Hill), Miss Nellie Lingard; "To-morrow" (Keel), Mr. G. College; selected song, Madame Kate Campion; selection from "Rigoletto" (Verdi), Misses Doris Jenkins and Rita Madden, Messrs. Gordon Fagan and Bert Valentine. Elocutionary items were given by Miss Joyce Hould, "The Doom of Stephenus," and by Mr. Dan Flood, who recited the humorous "The Honourable Bertram Proposes a Toast." The scene from "The Taming of the Shrew," enacted by Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bailey, was greatly appreciated. Instrumenta] solos were contributed by the city organist, Mr. Maughan Barnett, who played "Fantasia on National Airs," and by Master Harold Taberner, a young violinist, who played Albert Sahimons' Rumanian air and gipsy dance, "Korosi L'any." Miss K. O'Leary, Mr. C. Towsey and Mr. Potter were accompanists. Over £50 was raised at a benelit concert organised by the management of the Civic Theatre last evening. Items were given by Miss I. Langlands, Mr; R. Eskrigge, Mr. Fryer-Raisher and Miss I. Frost, Mr. E. Lynne and the Four Boy Sopranos. An orchestra of over thirty players, led by Mr. Haydn Murray, was in attendance. A film, "The Fifty-Fifty Girl," featuring Bebe Daniels, concluded the programme. Benefit concerts will be given by the Aloha Orchestra, in the Lewis Eady Hall on Friday evening, and by the Puccini Musical Society, assisted by the St. Benedict's choir, in the Town Hall, on Sunday evening. There will be a community singing entertainment in the Town Hall during the lunch hour on Thursday. ' .
