Convicted on a eharg* of being in a 'state'-'of intoxication while in .a motor car'in Queen Street last evening, Albert Jblin Wiiglitson, salesman, aged 23, had his driver's license cancelled, for two years by Mr.-W. H. Woodward, S-M-, at the P6lice Court to-day- . , • Accused, for .yhom Mr.,-Bryee Hart appeared, pleaded not guilty. Two constables stated that Wrightson was in a,.state of intoxication and that he was ; unfit to have control of a motor car. His breath smelt of liquor, and he was very talkative. "As soon as he saw.me lie tried to pour eucalyptus on his handkerchief," said the constable who arrested accused. - t . ~v a The watchhoUse keeper stated that Wrightson's speech was very thick, his eyes were unfocussed and- staring, and lie could not be stopped talking. He also smelt strongly of liquor. Mr. Hart: Do you mean to say you could smell liquor in spite of the fact that-'he smelt of eucalyptus ?—Yes, he .smelt of beer. V- " *■< Mr. Hart submitted tliat accused was 1 not intoxicated. He had a severe cold, and since Thursday lie had, been taking eucalyptus, and when the constable approached him he was in the act of bending doM'n to sniff more from his handkerchief. -■ : . Dr.. Hortori, called by counsel, said he examined Wrightson three-quarters of an'. hour after his arrest, and in witness' opinion he was not intoxicated and his judgment aiid memory were not •impaired. \ ■ ■ / , • . _ . Wrightson also gave evidence. . . "As I said the other day, tlie best .-"way to protect the public is to. take; away the licenses of these, men," remarked the magistrate. '
