MAZES.
At Alkborough, in Lincolnshire, and at . Hilton, Huntingdonshire, mazes exist. Each is known, as "Julian's Bower." The first was' cut in the turf by mo'nks 800 years ago, and its design is copied in the pavement of the porch of the adjoining church. The farm owning the mazfe at Fritwell is called "Troy." The point is interesting, for the name of "Julian's Bower" is thought by some to derive from the intricate "Troy" game described in Virgil. (Aen. v,. 588-593), as played on horseback by lulus and his comrades, example at Fritwell is known as "Shepherd's Maze." At Wing, in the county- of Rutland, is a . maze said to have been cut in the turf many year 3 ago by a blind shepherd. At Asenby, in Yorkshire, is another maze that is well looked .after. One on St. Catherine's Hill, Winchester, is quadrangular. Comberton (Cambs.) has its maze, and at Leigh, in Dorset, is a "Mizmaze."
