VISUALISATION.

ASTONISHING FEATS

ROTARY CLUB GATHERING,

'Members of the Auckland Rotary Club were astonished yesterday when Mr. Tvon Phipps, of the University of Melbourne, delivered an address on "Visualisation as an Aid to Learning," and followed ifc with a demonstration by two of his associates. After Mr. Phipps had emphasised the modern trend of education in utilising the imagination, particularly through the sense of sight, by lantern slides and motion- pictures, etc., he called upon Mr. Jas. Phipps (Melbourne) and Mr. G. R. Marsden (London) to give demonstrations. Mr. Phipps proceeded to call off rapidly the names .of at least 50 Rotarians, with immediate identification in each: case, although he had, prior to entry at the meeting, been an entire stranger to them all. Mr. Marsden followed by naming, identifying and calling out the Rotarian classification of approximately the same number. Mr. Phipps did not divulge the lines of study which had , made these feats possible, but said that they were not the outcome of such artificial aids to memory as mnemonics. He mentioned that Mr. Phipps had had only GJ months training in visualisation. The visitors included a number of representatives of the Univer- ; sity Senate.

. The lunch meeting was presided over by'the president, Rotarian C. J. Tunks. and was held in Milne and Choyce's reception hall. Amongst the visitors were Messrs. J. M. Thompson (Winnipeg), A. J. Simpson (Midhirst, Taranakij, Y. Joske (Suva), G. R. Marsden (London), Jas. Phipp (Melbourne), X. Roberind. (Rotorua), H. W. Webb (Haweni), W. Ardney (Nukualofa, Tonga), J.
