HAROLD LOGAN WINS.

N.Z. GOLD TROTTING CUP.

FAVOURITE'S JBASY VICTORY

SPRINT TO FESTIVAL.

Except that there was a strong gale blowing the conditions were ideal for the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday. The fields were good throughout aJid the Gold Cup attracted one of the strongest fields of the best horses seen out this season. Harold Logan \ scored an easy win, going to the front before half the distance had been covered and giving nothing a chance afterwards. The totalisator turnover for the day amounted to £26,304 10/ compared with £40,071 last year, a decrease of £13,666,10/. .

The Probationers. Crimson Key and Nimbus, who had shown form recently were made almost equal favourites for the Probationer , Handicap, Logaleen being the on'y other one seriously supported. Golden Oaks' supporters were soon out of anxiety as Corrigan's gelding fell over at the start. Bara Gold, Crimson Key, Nimbus, Daddy Longlcgs and Logaleen were early in the lead, nothing else getting near them. Townley, with Nimbus, made for' the doctor when half the journey wae covered and though Hooper, with Logaleen, made an effort in the straight, Nimbus still had a neck advantage at the finish. Logaleen is far from sound and Hooper was afraid to.use- the whip on her. Llewellyn appeared to have a chance in the middle stage, but faded out. Crimson Key showed nothing to justify eupport. The winner improved over 13s on his handicap. • A Close One. All started in the Kaitoke Handicap for unhoppled trotters, King's Voyage being over twice as well supported as Kyra. Bright Light and Eileen Wood, the dividend payers, were next beet backed. Eileen Wood went to the front at the start and not until the last stages of the journey did anything look to havo a chance of heading off Kennerley's mare. In a close finish Eileen Wood appeared to win by a neck, but the judge gave the decision to Bright Light, who was handled with great judgment by A. Bryce. From the Press stand Eileen Wood looked to have won, but it mu6t bo admitted the angle is a very deceptive one, the judge being the only one in a position to say definitely, but it looks as if the official made a mistake on this occasion. Lady Fan showed plenty of speed in finishing fourth and may do better later, but King's Voyage never looked a possibility and Kyra was another who had every chance.

Easy Win In Trotting Cup. The New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup drew the most select field ever seen at Hutt Park, but the race was somewhat disappointing as the hot favourite, Harold Logan, always looked like the winner. His recent failure at Auckland did not deter punters rushing Harold Logan's chance on the machine as he carried 925 tickets, and Travis Axworthy 016. Dundas Boy and Wrackler were also fairly well supported. ' Harold Thorpe, Logan Chief and Harold Logan were the early leaders. Harold logan was within striking distance of the leaders turning out of the str&ight the first time, and from then onward he was pacing • so kindly that ho never gave his supporters the slightest anxiety. Logan Park, at this stage, was also going well, but collapsed completely at the end of a mile.and a half. Rounding for home Harold Logan shot away from the field, and went on to win with the greatest of case from Harold Thorpe by four lengths. Logan Chief stopped badly over the last bit, Harold Thorpe being a good length ahead of him at tne post. Next to finish were Jewel Pointer and Wrackler. The latter had a bad position throughout, but Jewel Pointer was well placed as he was fifth going out of the straight the first time. The big disappointment was Logan Park, Avho showed real brilliancy for about a mile and a half. Dundas Boy and King Pointer jibbed on the mark.

A Favourite Beaten. All started in the January Handicap. The Greymouth-owned Great Author, who Lad S. A. Edwards behin'd him in place of J. J. Jardcn, was apparently regarded as a certainty in view of his West Coast running. Purser, Zella and Lydia were in front most of the way, with the others well bunched. Purser, Great Author, Lydia, Eegal Voyage and Zella came into the straight with little between them, Eegal Voyage putting in a great effort over the last furlong, to win by a length and a half, with Great Author about half a length behind Purser. An interesting feature of'the race was Eegal Voyage's final irresistible swoop. Perhaps Purser's driver, L. 0. Thomas, was a, little over-confident, as the field were loafing for most of the journey, and Great Author did not go on with Ins run, but Lydia got into a bad position. Zella, assisted by the slow pace, fluttered her admirers for most of the way, but finished in the ruck.

Double Figure Dividend. All faced the starter in the Improvers , Handicap, for which Morrison and Eeal Girl monopolieed the betting, the winner, Bonniewah, returning a doubleliguro price. Elite Bingen, Jessie Huon and Dan Eoco failed to 6trike a gait, Lightwood, ■' Ailsa Bingen, Morrison, Bonniewah and Good Lady pa6sing the stand in that order the first time round. Good Lady and Lightwood went to the front from Bonniewah and Morrison with a mile to go, but the leader tangled badly entering the back and Native Hero collided with him, Clutterbuck, the hitter's pilot, being capsized. Bonniewah was then left in charge, the Ashhurst mare leading Eeal Girl, Lightwood and Morrison into the straight. Eeal Girl then made her effort, but Bonniewah held on to win by half a length, with Morrison a length and a half back. Bonniewah had everything in her favour, but she won well, though the field was far from being a good lot. She won at the recent South Wairarapa meeting. Morrison went well for a mile, but from then raced unsteadily.

Favourite Wins. Daddy was withdrawn from the Novice Daeh Handicap, for which Logaleen was made an even money fancy. Hooper's mare dasnea away at the start and was never headed. A furlong from the start Wheat King's gear went wrong, and the" strongly fancied candidate' pulled up. Windshield, Billy Brent, and Driftwave followed Logaleen, but three and a half furlongs from home Venetian Lady, Victor Kyle, Mr. Gtiv, and Nimbus had their chances ruined when Bara Gold broke. Logaleen and David McElwyn led into the straight, and only Windshield had a. chance with the leaders, but Logaleen was never seriously troubled to win by three lengths, the same distance separating second and third. The winner went smoothly except for one skip. Nimbus

had to be pulled right up, but did ru-t look to have a chance when the trouble occurred, David McElwyn is trained by L. 0. Thomas on the course, and had been holding. his own with Cbona way in recent track trials. For a colt who is not yet three years old, David McElwyn showed that he possesses, rare courage, and this American youngster, who is aristocratically related, should go far. Hβ lost several lengths at the start. The Trotters. King's Voyage made a strong fancy in the, Progressive Handicap, for ,unhoppled trotters. Eileen Wood practically led all the way, St. Petrox and King's Voyage being her nearest attendants for most of the journey. Kyra made up most of her handicap by the time they had passed the stands for the second time, but the effort proved too much and King's Voyage, who went an improved race, was left as Eileen Wood's most serious competitor. Eileen Wood stayed'on better than in her fiivst race and held off King's Voyage to win by half a length, with Kyra four lengths further back. St. Petrox was fourth, the rest of the field being hopelessly out of it.

Festival Easily. Lightwood, Good Lady and Real Girl were the withdrawals from the Dispatch Handicap, for which Morrison and Festival were the chief fancies. Ailsa Bingen failed to gefaway and Hilltop and Morrison went to the front from Festival. The latter soon asserted herself and at one stage had fully a dozen lengths' advantage. She went on to win by five lengths from Author Franz, who finished too resolutely for the disappointing Morrison who, for some reason, was made favourite. Lady Jewel wae < fourth.
