LORD RUTHERFORD.

SENATE CONFERS DEGREE.

HONORARY DOCTORATE

FIEST DOMINION AWARD,

Lord Rutherford, formerly Sir Ernest Rutherford, was to-day awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science of the New Zealand University. The degree is the first honorary degree awarded by the University. It is a recognition by the University Senate of Lord Rutherford's services to science.

Professor J. Rankinc Brown, who moved that the degree be conferred, said that, although Lord Rutherford was a Doctor of Science of many universities, lie did not hold this degree in the Xcw Zealand University. He had always taken a keen interest in the. Dominion* and it was with pride that the University conferred its highest honour upon him. Lord Rutherford was educated at Nelson College and Canterbury University College, and, after graduating M.A. and B.Sc. of the University of New Zealand, he went with a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge.
