The Government of India's appreciation of the situation in India during the '. week ended January 3, referring to the recent mob violence in Bombay City, says that the hooligan element continues to take an active part in demonstrations. A number- of the police were injured by stone-throwing and private cars were damaged. Elaborate arrangements by the National Congress organisation to declare at their midnight meetings on December 31 in the city a resolution of independence were denounced by the authorities, and the meetings and processions were prevented without difficulty,'but'there were outbreaks of hooliganism and hostile mobs severely attacked the police picket, which was forced to open fire. Referring to Burma the report states that the rebellion in the Tliarawaddy district is being brought under control and that there is no longer cause for serious concern.
