55 MEN EMPLOYED

"GOOD, HONEST WORKMEN."

Fifty-five men were placed on unemployment relief work in Devonport this morning, according to a statement by Mr. J. Hislop, the acting-Mayor.

. Mr. Hislop said the funds available would keep the men in work for some days. In addition, eleven men had beeu organised into a party for the collection of grass seed throughout North Shore. They had been "guaranteed 7/ a day, which would be increased to a maximum of 14/ from the proceeds of the sale of till seed. Any balance would be handed over to the Labour Department for unemployment relief.

"Quite satisfactory results have been obtained from tlie unemployed labour already utilised in the borough," added Mr. Hislop. "The work generally has been very well done. We have been fortunate in having had the services of good, honest workmen."
