STAND-BY PLANT.

I " CANTERBURY'S NEED.

i ' . MACHINERY ARRIVING SHORTLY, i I

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. ' The first two engines for the Diesel electric stand-by plant for Canterbury are due to arrive in New Zealand from England at the middle of this month, and the other two a fortnight later. Two generators will reach Lyttelton on April 23, and the remainder one month later, these being the contract guarantee dates. | No unexpected difficulties arose in securing machinery foundations on the Lyttelton site, behind the old graving dock. On the contrary hard ground was found exactly at tlie depth to which it was planned to place the concrete. Provision is being made in the building for the ultimate erection of two engines and generators now being used in the Penrose station, Auckland, but the latter will not be transferred until the Arapuni hydro-electric scheme is •pain in full working order and there i« no risk of power shortages in the North.
