PLUNGED INTO RAVINE.

DEATH OF ELDERLY MAN. PAPAMOA EOAD FATALITY. INQUEST OPENED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) J TE PUKE, this day. An inquest concerning the death of Mr. William Jones, who succumbed to injuries received as the result of a car accident on the Upper Papamoa Road on New Year's Day, was opened to-day before Mr. Caleb Lally, J.P., coroner. Formal evidence concerning the identification of the deceased was dealt with, but the other witnesses of the accident were still suffering under nervous strain, and were too shaken to give evidence. The coroner adjourned the inquest sine die. Deceased met his death by his car crashing into a ravine of from 500 to 600 ft. Mr. Harry Jones, the deceased's son, had a miraculous escape l'rom death. He was admitted to Tauranga Hospital, and his condition- is reported to be improved. Mr. William Jones, who was 80 years of age, resided in Whakatane, and was well known throughout the Bay of Plenty, particularly in the Tauranga district. He is survived by a son, Mr. Harry Jones, and a daughter, Mrs. Garraway, of Whakatane.
