PLUNGE OVER BANK.

LORRY AND FOUR PEOPLE

ELDERLY MAN FATALLY INJURED,

(From Our.. Own Correspondent.) TAURANGA, this day. As the result of a car plunging over a 500 ft bank on the Upper Papainoa, Road, near Tauranga, on New Year's Day, Mr. William Jones, aged 80, has sucsumbed to injuries lie received. The son of deceased,-Mr. Harry Jones, a well-known • farmer, of Papamoa, was travelling in a lorry towards Te Puke with his wife ' and daughter, and Mr. William Jones, and when a mile east of Mr. Jones' home, the vehicle left the road and plunged down a steep ravine. In the descent of about 000 ft the vehicle somersaulted many times before being stayed in its progress by a rock. Mrs. and Miss-Jones were thrown clear and escaped injury. Mr. H. Jones and his father were also hurled from the lorry. The former was cut about the face and much bruised, while Mr. Jones senior suffered a broken collarbone and serious internal injuries. Assistance was called by Miss Jones ; and a track had to be cut before Mr. W. Jones could be brought to the roadway, and then taken to his son's home. He received medical attention, but died shortly after. 5 o'clock on Sunday morning. Mr. H. Jones was taken to hospital on the evening of the accident, severely shaken and suffering from shock. Mr. William Jones had resided in Tauranga for about 50 years. He originally held land at Te Puke and was in business in Tauranga for a long period. He was closely identified with the .Presbyterian Church and also conducted the musical society. He retired from business about 10 years ago. He took a very keen interest in local affairs. He is survived by one son, Mr. Harry Jones, of Papamoa, and one daughter, Mrs. H. O. Garraway, of Whakatane.
