able to hold any cows, and, during the night, all except one brook loose, and took charge of a farm at the head of the valley. The remaining animal stayed in the paddock, but charged, everyone who went near it. The herd gored a heifer and charged a farmer, and remained in possession for three days. • , At midnight on Monday the management started off to drive the animals seven miles to the Thorndon station' for transport to Auckland. The route taken was r build the foreshore, and the cattle frequently took the most direct route over boats, boatsheds, and gardens. On arrival at Thorndon one steer, was missing so the'city ranger went back and located it, but was promptly charged. He called for assistance from Thorndon, whereupon the animal, jumped into the harbour and swam five miles to Ngahauranga in five hours. On landing, it held up a stock train.. The nineteenth steer,. which was left in the football ground, was abandoned overnight, Wednesday, . but was gone .in the morning, • and is now posted missing.
