STRIKE CALLED.
Broken , Hill Miners Reject
Terms.
.UNION ORDERS; CESSATION.
: SYDNEY, January 2.
At Broken Hill, by an almost unanimous vote, a large meeting of the Workers' Industrial Union, rejected the mining company's terms for resumption of work, and decided to ciall all tie members out on strike. Five thousand men are involved, and many engaged in other industries are also affected. The Broken Hill Workers' Industrial Union last month rejected the owners' proposals with regard to wages and conditions for the New Year. Several other' unions conditionally accepted the suggestions, but their acceptance meant nothing aa the miners held the key to the situation, and their definite refusal to entertain the terms proposed practically meant the closing down of the industry. • PITS STILL IDLE, SOUTH WALES MINES. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, January 2. On the South Wales coalfields yesterday, following the failure on Wednesday to get the owners and men to renew their, discussion, the stoppage was almost complete. It affected 140j000 miners.
RUGBY, January 2,
Hopes are entertained locally and at the Mines Department of a settlement by the Joint Conciliation Board, which, however, cannot meet before Saturday.
