TRADE OPPORTUNITIES.

There is an opening for farmers to increase their income in a branch of trade at present greatly neglected. New Zealand has greater possibilities than any other new country for the development of the pig industry. "There is no other livestock industry which can be so quickly developed. Pigs are prolific breeders and reach maturity in a ehort time. There is no physical reason why the United Kingdom should not obtain the whole of her needs in pig meat from Within the Empire." This is quoted from L. St. Clare Grondona's "Empire Stocktaking" (Simpkin, London), a •most valuable book for business men, politicians, economists, farmers of all kinds, and the general reader who wishes to understand something of the Empire's trade prospects. There is an enormous supply of trade statistics and shrewd comments thereon. Grain, meat, dairy produce, fruit, sugar, nuts, tobacco, textiles, rubber, timber, ores, machinery, care, all are fully dealt with, and the trade in them throughout the Empire described and collated. Whilst England imports almost as many eggs from foreign countries ae she 1 and the. Dominions produce (about 2,500,000,000) she can take twice as many more. Mr. Grondona's statistics are so illuminating that one hopes his book will be widely read and act as a tonic, if not as a whip.
