SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The Mangere East Croquet Club held a successful dance and card evening in the Mangere East Hall on New Year's Eve, when there was a good attendance. Music was supplied by Miss Burnside, while Mrs. Moore and Mr. Midgley played several pianoforte duets as extras. During the evening Miss Martin, of Wellington, sang two songs, after which she was presented with a bouquet of roses by Mrs. A. Hemyood, president of the club. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss P. Kerr and partner, while the 500 tournament was won by Miss B. Key and Mr. A. J. Roberts. The Auckland branch of the British Sailors' Society brought to a successful conclusion the Christmas and New Year festivities by giving a "High Tea" and concert in the Sailors' Rest, Lower Albert Street, to all the sailors in port on New Year's night. Mr. T. Clark, chairman of the Board of Management, presided. A toast list was honoured, after which the tables were cleared and a two-hour vocal and instrumental programme was enjoyed. Every man was made the recipient of a "diddy bag" well stocked with stationery, literature and a mending outfit. This was made possible by the generosity of the ladies of the various city churches. The men were also taken to Henderson r- \ Boxing Day, and here sports and games- were the order of the day. On the return journey to the city the. popular secretary. Miss E., Howie, presented the trophies won at the sports.
