MOA SKELETONS.

TWO FOUND AT WAIHI.

DISCOVERY BY THAMES MAN.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)

THAMES, this day

Two complete moa skeletons were discovered by Mr. H. E. Tonge., of Thames, on theAVaihi beach during the holidays. The prevailing westerly winds swept the sand away, uncovering the bones. Mr. Tonge is a Maori curio enthusiast. He was searching the site of an old Maori workshop, known to exist on the beach, when he discovered the skeletons. They were evidently very old, for they crumpled when touched. It was impossible to remove them. The largest skeleton is about six feet from head to toe. The other is slightly smaller. This is the second find of moa bones in the same place. Mr. Tonge and Mr. W. Hammond, also a Maori enthusiast, of Thames, found scattered bones three years ago. The only other known instance of the finding of moa remains on the Coromandel Peninsula was at Opito Bay, many years ago. •
