FIRE IN SCHOOL
ATTEMPT TO BURN CONVENT.
PETROL SPRINKLED ON FLOOR
WINDOW FORCED. OPEN.

Evidence of a deliberate but unsuccess-. ful attempt to burn the convent school in Heretaunga Street, Hastings, was discovered by firemen and police when summoned by an alarm at 2.50 a.m. to-day. Little da,mage was done to the building, which' is old and built entirely of wood. It is shortly to.be replaced.by : a new building, toward the construction of which several thousands of pounds have been collected. After the fire was extinguished it was discovered that someone had forced-open, a window and, after, pouring benzine or kerosene on the°floor, had thrown'down a lighted match. ••'. : The insurance on the building was £1000 in the Phoenix Office.
