LABOUR DOES NOT NOMINATE. CANBERRA, January 1. In conformity with the Labour Government's policy, no Australians have been recommended for New Year honours. LORD RUTHERFORD. Sir Ernest Rutherford was born at. Nelson, New Zealand, in 1871, being educated at Nelson College and Canterbury College. He took a degree in the New Zealand University with high honours, and won an 1851 Exhibition scholarship, with , which he went 'to Cambridge to study science. Since 1919 he has been director of the Cavendish laboratary.
World-famous for • his researches into the election And .radioactivity, he has been awarded .the , Kerbs'. Prize, the Rumford, Franklin .and. Copley medals, as well as honorary degrees of "the leading universities of the world. -He was married in 1900 to Miss 'Mary 'Newton, of Christchureh. A knighthood was conferred upon him in 1914, and the Order of Merit in 1925. Sir Ernest has several times revisited New Zealand, having been in the Dominion last in 1926.
