LAID "TOTE" ODDS.
TWO BOOKMAKERS FINED
OPERATIONS IN NEWMARKET,
Charged with laying "tote" odds and carrying on business as bookmakers in Newmarket, Charles Mandereon, aged 39, and William Fairley, aged 36, appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court this morning. Manderson was fined £5 and Fairley £10, both with the alternative of a month in gaol.
On the application of DetectiveSergeant Kelly the bookmaking charges were withdrawn in each case. To the other charges accused pleaded guilty.
"Manderson has been carrying on business as a bookmaker round about the hotels in Newmarket," eaid Mr. Kelly. "Yesterday a constable saw him make-six bete."
Mr. F. D. McLiver, who appeared for both mfin, said Manderson had been employed by the Railway Department. He had a bad heart and bad health and had been forced to leave the Department. He had only £78 superannuation, and he had taken on bookmaking in a small war.
Mr. Kelly: IL lias been going,, for three or four years. Mr. McLiver": .He is only in a email way. He couldn't be in a big way, because he has not got the money. Mr. Kelly: These men have been troublesome out at Newmarket. The Magistrate: They should not be in the hotels at all. "A Little Bit Bigger." In describing Fairley's offences, Mr. Kelly said that he had"been carrying on business as a bookmaker for a number of years at Newmarket. The best that could be said of him was that he was a professional bookmaker. "And an honest one," added Mr. McLiver. "I'll be quite fair," eaid counsel. "He is in a slightly bigger way than the last man, but even he does not do big betting. He is a very decent, honest chap."
