The Christmas Eve crowds in the city were much as usual.' The shops were busy, but : purchases generally . Wef e smaller in value, although the spirit of merry-making Was not damped. . The: Weather was hot and. humid, sending large crowds to tiie ; beaches, which were well patronised, as. well as scores of other holiday resorts* A' hot, bright . morning changed to. dull, threatening weather, with one, or two light falls of rain.
