MATCHES OVERSEAS. ENGLAND V. SOUTH AFRICA, FIRST TEST BEGUN. CAPETOWN, December 24 The first Test cricket match between England and South Africa was begun to-day at Johannebburg. Chapman won the toss and put South Africt in to bat on an easy wicket. The home side collapsed, and were all out for 126. Siedle made 13, Curnow 13, Mitchell 6, Catterall 5,' Viljoen 7, Balaskas 7, Cameron 0, McMillan 45 not out, Nupen 0, Vincent 2, Newson 10. There were 18 extras. Tate took two for 20, Voce four for 45, Peebles four for 43. England had made 167 for five wickets when stumps were drawn. Wyatt made 8, Leyland 29, Hammond 45 not out, Hendren 8, Turnbull 28, Chapman 28, White 8 not out. There were 13 extras.

WEST INDIES TOUKISTS

TASMANIA DISMISSED FOR 280. HOBART, December 25. The second cricket match between Tasmania and the West Indies was commenced at Hobart yesterday in fine weather. There was a short adjourn-/ ment after luncheon on account of rain, which caused a further suspension for 10 minutes, and at 5,30 p.m. play was abandoned for the day. Tasmania won the toss and scored 216 for five wickets (Nash 53, Burrows 44 not out, Putnam 34, Green 33). The match was continued to-day in fine, weather and before a good attendance of spectators on an excellent wicket. Tasmania took their first inning's score to 280, made in 294 minutes. Burrows made 54. v Constantino bowled remarkably well, taking six wickets for 25 runs, and getting victims with a slower ball. Francis took one Avicket for 46, Scott two for 69, Sealey one for 41. The West Indies when stumps were drawn.had scored 139 for two wickets. Roach made 23, Birkett 74 not out, Martin 36 not out.

SHEFFIELD SHIELD. CENTURY TO NITSCKE. SYDNEY, December 25. In a Sheffield Shield cricket match at Adelaide to-day between Queensland and South Australia, the home team made 286 for seven wickets (Nitscke 142, Lee 39). MAUNGAKIEKIE V. HOWICK. .
