The first census of any certainty was that by Moses of the Israelites, 1491 B.C. As regards England an elaborate and successful effort was made in 1081 by William the Conqueror in the institution of ,the famous Domesday Book. The first modern census of Great Britain was in 1801. , It did hot extend to Ireland, where the first attempt at a census was. ten years later.
