"VIEW OF FRANK-PLEDGE."
A notice of the holding of a "View of Frank-Pledge" affixed to the parish church door in the village of Clavering, North Essex, puzzled visitors. "Frankpledge" was a system the Normans adopted from a Saxon custom, whereby groups of freemen became responsible for each other's good conduct. At Clavering ten freemen formed a group, called a Tithing. No freeman-could refuse to belong to a Tithing, but he could.choose his Tithing, and a "View" was held from time to time to enable the lord of the manor to know to what Frank-pledge Tithing each freeman was attached.
