SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A progressive croquet party was held at the Auckland Croquet Club yesterday ■ afternoon, when the prizes were won by Mrs. Fletcher and Mrs. Grey. Among those present were: Sirs. Shanley, president, in a cherry jumper guit and hat to tone; Mesdames Bell, Evans/ D. Clayton, D'Artli, S. Reid, Keesing, Rainger, Grey, Wiliams, Daniels, Pegler, and Miss Brown. . . , , * -» * » A suggestion was made that the Birkenhead and 'Northcote districts might jointly endow a cot at the Karitaife Home "at Auckland, and this proposal will be considered at the next regular meeting, which was fixed for February. Seasonable wishes were conveyed to the president, Mrs. A. E. Greenslade, and the hope that she would soon be completely recovered from the illness which had laid, her aside for several weeks. * ■» *■ * * Two concerts, arranged by Mrs. Raeburn and Mr. ,Av -Hamblin,. were given at the hospital, : last evening. This concluded a successful, season extending from May to Deeembiiiy There was a large attendance of players and supporters of the club. The secretary, Mr. C. G. Culpan, and president, Mr. Gallagher, controlled the 500 card competitions held during the evening. Mr! L. W. Lovett, treasurer, presented the prizes and reported ■ymt the club had had a successful season financially. He thanked the ladies for their assistv unce. Prizes were Avon by Mrs. S. The last of a series oE old-time dances for this was held on Wednesday evening in the clubhouse at Bayswater, being given by the ladies' committee connected with the Takajpuna-Ba'yswater, Boating Club. Being the last of the season a special effort was made, both by the hostesses and those attending, which resulted in a very successful dance.
