A delightful gift afternoon was held last Friday afternoon by Mrs. Charles R. Smith, at her residence, Domain Drive, in honour of Mrs. G.-Brown, who left for Sydney by the Aorangi on Monday evening. Mrs. G. Brown was- the recipient of many gifts. * ■* * * * i A shop to sell jams, cakes and- Christmas novelties will be opened to-morrow in Queen Street, and,will run till Friday, to assist the Plyiiijj Angel Mission to Seanien. It is organised by Harbour Lights Guild, under the presidency of Mrs. Preston Chambers. Mount Roskill League of Mothers had a large attendance at the closing meeting on Wednesday last. This took.th'e fo'rm of a social and competition afternoonl. Competitions resulted: —Cakes, Mrs. Allen 1, Mrs. 'Grindrod 2, Mrs. Dowell 3; sponge, Mre. Shepherd 1, Mrs. Stringer 2; article made from sugar sack, Mrs. Whitniore 1, Miss Betty Bates 2." Musical and elocutionary items were contributed l by Miss Dalton. Each child under five was given a present. During the "afternoon bouquets were presented to Mrs. Allen, president, and to Mrs. •Bates, secretary. Mrs. Bates was also presented with a dinner gong as a mark of -appreciation of her work for the league. -. •

The. gardening. circle of the Lyceum Club spent a most delightful day picnicking in the ■ picturesque grounds of \Mrs. Morley Bell and Mrs. Robert Burns, Howick, on Tuesday. Both of these homesteads overlook the Hauraki Gulf, tho Corcmandel- Peninsula and the islands of Waiheke, Motvtapu and Motuihi. Beyond lies Ponui or Chamberlain'e Island, called . after the two brothers "Chamberlain, who, in the pioneering days settled there in homes built from material brought out by them for that purpose from Glasgow. Mrs. Morley Bell welcomed her guests and provided tea, and during the afternoon presented' Mrs. Tattefsfield, convener of the circle, with a charming posy made by herself. Before leaving Mre. C. Dickeneon proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs. Morley Bell and Mrs. R. Burns for the enjoyable time they had given the circle. About sixty members were present.

A successful garden paijty was held at the residence, of Mr. W. Simpkin, Aoroa, Northern Wairoa, in aid of (he Methodist Church. Stalls were erected in sheltered nooks and corners. To ftelebratc the official opening of the new courts of the Kumeu Tennis Club a flannel dance was held in the Public Hall on Saturday night. There was a record attendance of members, and visitors from Riverhcad,* Waimauku, Waikoukou, Hobsonville, Wooduill and Helensville were present. The hall was prettily • decorated with 1 streamers of blue and gold, the club colours. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Noeline Smith and Mr. C. Tickle.
