A LETTER OF INTEREST.

HOW A COUNTRY HEADER SPENDS HER TIME. Within easy reach of Auckland the little township of Waitakcrc is situated amid some of the prettiest country to be seen hereabouts. This letter should be of special interest to all Auckland readers, for the place described may be visited by any city dweller during a week-end. Waitakere. Dcuvi- Peter Pan, — Waitakere is a snail district about twenty miles north of Auckland. It is surrounded,by the ranges, which I suppose you have heard about. Maybe you have been in them. I often go for picnics into the ranges. There is one part of. the ranges which I think is well known to picnic-makers from town. This is where the* sparkling cascades tumble down to a pool at the foot of three very high cliffs. It is really a beautiful sight.

Even the bus]] on the way to the cascades is worth seeing. There are tall ferns, kauris, and creeping ratas. There is also clematis, which looks . lovely when it comes out in the spring. I think everyone likes this bush creeper, and quite a lot of city people have it growing over trellis in their gardens.

But not only have we the ranges to afford # us pleasure, and scenery, but there is also the glorious West Coast, where many and many a holidaymaker spends his or her enjoyment. The only trouble is, though, that the breakers are very rough, and a drowning accident is easily caused if one isn't careful.

Then we have, a.creek running through the district, and there are several small waterfalls, with delightful swimming pools at the bottom of them. This creek is very wide, so that punting is quite a favourite pastime in hot weather. There are also two or three tennis clubs where one can spend a Saturday afternoon, or, in the summer, when it is so light, we can play after tea. So you see, Peter Pan, we can have quite a lot of enjoyment here, even though Waitakere is only a small district. Yours sincerely, Jean Hill.
