PROPOSED WAGES CUT.
SEAMEN RAISE PROTEST
ALTERNATIVES SUGGESTED.
At, the monthly stop-work meeting of tho Auckland branch of the Federated Seamen's Union of New Zealand, held thic;- morning, at which 320 members attended, tho following resolution . was unanimously carried: — "That tli's meeting of members of the Federated Seamen's Union of New Zealand records its protest against the attempt of the Employers' Federation to reduce the wages of workers engaged in actual work of production and distribution. Wages are but a very small part of the cost of production, particularly in primary industries, most of which are not covered by Arbitration Court awards. "Wβ strenuously object to any reduction in the wages of the workers, realisin", that existing wages do not afford a .decent standard of living, in view of tho intermittent employment which is all that a large proportion of workers have. We recommend, in place of attacking the m-esenfc low wage of the workers, that watered stock, inflated land values, usurious rates of interest and high salaries of non-productive ofucials be reVl "We call upon all workers to join in a national movement for the purpose of co-ordinating our forces to fight against I coolie standard of living such ae fa ronosed by our alleged patriots, who o ° s P tly profiteered during- the war and Xu? policy Piled up tie J* * which they now want the workers to pay.
