EPSTEIN ART.
The suggestion by the "Christcliurcli Times" that the much-discussed figures sculped byEpstein should 'be 'brought to New Zealand, when they are removed from the Dominion's house in. London, savours ,of tlio wickedly frivolous, and I am now awaiting some indignant protests from "True Art," "Decency First" and other esteemed newspaper correspondents. The truth is, however, that most of us, including those protestants, would like to have some enlarged close-up photographs showing us exactly what all the korero is about. Everyone is, of course, an art critic to himself. He, or she, knows what lie, or she, likes, and either can't stand or adores this modern art. Let us have those close-ups for consideration, per medium of the cinema, and incidentally give a much-needed fillip to the Britisli film business. . And yet it may be that the Epstein masterpieces- would make a suitable nucleus for the collection of statuary which Wellington's Mayor suggested recently should form an approach in course of time to the national art shrine on its hill above the Basin Reserve. So far there is the statue of Queen Victoria in position on the proposed avenue route. Subject to approval by city councillors and other eminent critics, the Epsteins might form a, kind of 'bodyguard to Her Majesty. It would attract the attention of all visitors to the Empire City, indeed, it could be listed as one of the numerous wonderful spectacles to be seen in this modern Utopia. At this juncture one would welcome a few words oil* the subject from Sir Thomas Wilford. —TAN(«IWAI.
