SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

There was a srood attendance of dancers at the Woodhill Hall Committee's dance 011 Saturday night. The Monte Carlo -was "won by Miss Peggy Hyland and Mi. Fred. Aicken, and the sum of £9 was taken. -> 5 * * At the Fabian Club's rooms an interesting address was given by Mr. W. Anderton on "Disillusioned Democracy/' Mr. B. Martin acting as chairman. The hostesses were Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Peach, and there was a good debate. * * * * An enjoyable evening was spent in the Birkdale Hall on Saturday, a concert and dance, organised by the Birkdale Social Club, took,place. During the evening a presentation was made to Mr. L. Gilpin, a prominent member of the club, in honour of his approaching marriage. * * * * A successful Bring-and-Buy evening was held in the Presbyterian Hall, Dargaville. A fancy dre~s social was lield in the Methodist Hall, Onehunga, on Saturday night by the primary department or the Sunday school, under the supervision of the teachers. Mrs. W. J. Jordan and Miss K. Morton.. Mayoress, acted as judges, and awarded prizes to the following:" E. Insley, Old English lady; Gladys Skinner, Coster maid; E. Russell, bride; Gorman Laking. golliwog: A. Harden, canary: A. Mrs. Catherine Gardner, of Boston, U.S.A., was the guest of the ladies' committee of the Sunshine School, Nelson Street, on Friday morning. Mrs. Gardner, who is at present on a world tour, evinced a keen interest in the work being done in Auckland for children too delicate to attend ordinary schools. The open air school rooms, the rest rooms, where the little ones lie on cots and rest for a period of the day, the gymnasium/ and the solarium on the roof were visited. Mrs. Gardner gave an informal talk on food values and sun treatment, of whicli she had made a special study. Raw foods and sunlight is the essence of her discourse. At the annual gift afternoon held by the Navy League at their rooms yesterday afternoon there was a splendid attendance, and a number of "beautifullymade garments were received. This β-athering is always a most enthusiastic one. Each year "a case of clothing is sent to England for distribution among the dependents of sailors at Christmas time. Flannel is bought in Xew Zealand and members 'of the League and friends make 16 into clothing. Among the colloctich yesterday were a number of frocks made by the"gM s of the fifth and sixth standard? of the Paeroa, primary school. On their arriv.il the guests were received by Mrs. E. W. Gallaugher, president of thw ladies' committee, who later thanked them for the large number of gifts which they had brought. The Auckland French Club held their final meeting of the season in the club rooms last evening, when an enjoyable programme, arranged by Madame de Vidts and Mrs. Costello, was presented to a large attendance of members. In honour of Miss Stella Murray, the well-known New Zealand singer, and Mrs. Drage, of England, a very enjoyable morning tea was given by Mrs. C. E. Maguire at her home at the hospital yesterday. More delightful weather could not have been had, and a pleasant time was spent in the warm sunshine on the lawn, where Dr. and Mrs. Maguire received their guests. From the verandah the view of the/quiet green hills and the waters of -the harbour in the distance was most entrancing. In a brief speech of welcome Mrs. Maguire expressed her pleasure at Miss Murray's achievements in England, and later Miss Murray spoke in reply. Tea was served on the lawn, ■ where small tables were artistically arranged with bowls of marigolds and orange and yellow Iceland poppies. Mre. Maguire wore a frock of rose beige satin beaute, with ecru lace, and a black hat trimmed with flowers under the brim on one side.
