COULD BE ERECTED BY MARCH.

(By Telcg.vaph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. An electrical standby plant, with a capacity of 10,000 kilowatts, suitable for supplying power to Christchurch, has been located in Australia by Sir George Julius, an eminent engineer, who has been acting on behalf of the Christchurch City Council. The plant could be erected in New Zealand by the end of February or during March. An announcement to this effect was marie at a meeting of the council by Dr. Thacker, chairman of the electricity committee. He said information had been forwp.rded to the Minister of Public Works. The electricity committee submitted a" report dealing with the power shortage. With regard to street lighting, the committee said it felt very strongly the disability and inconvenience that the absence of lighting caused to the public. It was, however, confident, that ft power shortage might involve the community in serious dislocation and loss, and the absence of street lighting was believed to be least of the possible evils.
