DEVONPORT SHIELD.

SOMERVILLE AND SHORE DRAW. ST. LUKE'S AND EDEN WIN.

Though the Devonport Shield is considered a secondary affair it is already outrivalling the Davis. Cup in the way of exciting and closely-contested struggles. Last Saturday's programme provided one of the most strenuous contests witnessed this season, and contained some excellent hockey, including skilful stickwork. It was a treat to watch, 'Somerville and North Shore making every effort to gain the desired result, and what anxiety 'both teams suffered as the respective goals were endangered! The hattle between the Somerville forwards and the North Shore backs was even more tense than North Shore methods of goal-hunting; ye;t they were almost as convincing, and the game wound up with two goals apiece. 'St. I/uke's, in defeating Wesley by four goals to one, got on level terms with Somerville. Mount Eden secured two points at the expense of Whippets winning by four goals to one.
