VISITORS ALSO CONVICTED,

On a charge of exposing liquor for , sale after hours, Alfred Ernest Saiuty, licensee of the Wynyard Arms Hotel, was fined £7 10/ by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday afternoon. A charge of keeping licensed premises open for the sale of liquor after hours was dismissed. Fines of £2 each were imposed on Robert S. Bush, William Bekker, Frank William Kelly and Frederick Hall for being found unlawfully- on licensed premises. A similar charge against George Bain was dismissed. Sergeant Clark said that about 10.20 p.m. on August 30, he paid a visit to the hotel. The door was opened by a woman, whom witness thought was the wife of the licensee. The public bar was in darkness, but there was another bar at the end of the passage, and in it were the licensee and eight other men. There were signs of drink having been consumed. One man was drinking, and another was nearly intoxicated. When questioned, Kelly said that he had come to the hotel to see a_ lodger who owed him £1. Bekker said that he had also come to visit the same boarder. Bain said he was there on business and Moore said he came at 8 p.m. to get a bed, although he lived only about 200 yards away. ' Mr. McLiver said Bain had been a friend of Sainty for about 40 years.' He had a key to the premises and stayed there regularly. Sainty said that he had been a licensee for 20 years and had never been convicted. His Worship held that the men were not bona fide boarders.
