ARGENTINE CORN.
Preference Sought in United States. AVENUE TO TRADE TREATIES. NEW YORK, September 20. The "New York Times" says the Government of Argentina has sent a Note to the United States Government asking that the duties on maize shall bo waived in order to permit of the free entry of 500,000 to 1,000,000 metric tons—about 20,000,000 to 40,000,000 bushels—of Argentine corn into America. 'The Note points out that the suggested importation would comprise only 1 or 2 per cent of the United l States crop and that it-"would prove a solution of the United States' stringent shortage of feed grain and aid the Argentine farmers.
In view of the present relations between the two countries the concession sought would pave the way for treaties of reciprocity between Washington and Argentina, says the Note. Doubt is expressed that the Tariff Commission will consent to the proposed arrangement.
