THE OFFENDING PEDESTRIAN.
An unconscious humorist in the Legislative Council-suggests that the' .Government should' consider "placing. the onus of avoiding a collision on the pedestrian rather; than on the motor "driver." This is almost as. if some■body proposed, as a remedy for wife-beating, the punishment' of * wives. The Leader of the Council informed Mr. McCallum, ,that the law placed the onus equally on all parties involved,-but lie- tiddtjd^-apparently : way bf consolation—• that-' in.'.. cases : had been taken' successfully by' mbtorists against in^li^t ; ; . mfrequency, .- 0 f {such coses was, of course,'.'accounted, for by the, £act that •:pedestrian:.• generally-;the thi^f '.'sujffd-er 1 -in .'these , accidents." . It is -only fareiy that the motorist has a.real grievance, ks : when : a sharp-eyed pedestrian glances a ' < Ba'by", car to leg with his . umbrella and thereby scrapes a. little paint off, or, as in a recent "Punch" picture, when a motorist has to change gears suddenly in order to get over a very stout pedestrian. It is, of course, only just that the motorist should have recourse to the law for such injuries, and New Zealand motorists will be relieved to hear that they have this protection against the carelessness , and thoughtlessness of the pedestrian.
