fS EXHIBITION IN LONDON. ZEALAND'S SHARE. gyf*-**'* AUCKLAND FAVOURS SCHEME. t*y ■ if, New Zealand support is being sought for an art exhibition to be held in Lon- : don in January, February and March next. The exhibits will be representati\ e, as far as possible, of all parts j*s • of the British Empire. Si _ The Auckland Society of Arts has decided to urge the New Zealand Academy Ti of Fine Arts to send a collection of New £• Zealand work. This proposal will be disi» cussed at a gathering in Wellington on i£ October 3, when representatives will be present from Auckland, Napier, Wanga- ; r.ui, Wellington and Chratchurch. The Z Dunedin Society of Arts,, which has re- » cently severed its connection with the ■v* Dunedin Art Gallery, will probably be w represented at this conference. As a new venture in the field of art, . the London exhibition is planned on an Si , • ambitious scale. News of it was received gj ' at the annual meeting of the Auckland P; Society of Arts last evening from the $2 Royal British Colonial Society of Arts. ££ . The aim is to exhibit IGOO pictures I g£ ; and bronzes, the average number liung-i rt; in the rooms of the Royal Academy, •>>:- * plained Dr. E. A. J" Gunson, president £ , of the AuckMnd |. Society. Expenses, amounting to several thousand pounds, will be borne by the Royal British Colonial Society, which will be responsible for the upkeep of the gallery during the exhibition, hanging and unhanging, advertising,
V ''J printing, and carDr. E. B. Gunson. ria f° and insurance in Great Britain. "I hope tlie scheme will be favourably received by the New Zealand Academy/' said Dr. Gunson. "No doubt the academy will be guided by the standard of the work shown at the Wellington exhibition." New Zealand is at a disadvantage in not receiving sufficient notice of the exhibition, Dr. Gunson added. Only a few weeks are available to consider the proposal, collect the works of Dominion artists, and prepare them for shipment. If the January-March exhibition proves too large a venture the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists will consider an alternative suggestion that about 750 works be exhibited in half the galleries of the Royal Academy about six months later.
