THE AUCKLAND MEETING

CARD FOR FIRST DAY. TWO CLASSIC EVENTS. EXCELLENT FIELDS ENGAGED. Excellent acceptances have been received for the first day of the Auckland spring meeting, which opens on Saturday next, and there shovel be some splendid racing. Fifteen are carded for the Mitclielson Cup, and all-the chief fancies remain in. Historic, after his race in,the Avondale Cup, should be improved, and he should be one of the hardest to beat. Prodice is now within lib of Historic, and she should find the latter much harder to dispose of than in the Avondale Cup, for there is an extra two furlongs to traverse. However, this mare is so well that she should again run a good race. Star Stranger is. on the same mark as Prodice, and despite the fact that he was beaten in the' Avondale Cup, the distance will be more in his favour. Seatown has won over a mile and a half, and his fourth in the Avondale Cup demonstrated that he was not far from his best. With 8.4 he should show up if the going is on the soft side. Eager Eose has won up to a mile and three furlongs, while Count. Palatine, after his success in the Marangai Handicap at Wanganui, is well favoured just now. As a three-year-old last season he finished second to Honour in the Derby at Eiccarton, and only now seems to be coming back to his best. Standfast has yet to prove himself over the distance, while of the others Courageous and High Pitch look likely. A few that may find favour just now are Historic, Prodice, Count Palatine, Star Stranger and Seatown. Lady Quex failed at Wanganui, and also at Avondale, but she should be better for the racing she has had recently. Paganelli was making his first appearance for some time when he ran in the Flying Handicap at Avondale, and though he did not get into the money ho is likely to race more prominently in his next outing if he gets a firm track. Awarere won well at Avondale, and should be troublesome again. Eoyal Parade is due to contest the Flying Handicap at Hastings to-day, so that a better line will be obtained as to his prospects, for he has not raced for some time. Ceremony is galloping well at Wanganui, and though he did not get into the money at the meeting there earlier in the month he should be considerably benefited. If he was to do his best he would take a lot of beating. Chromodyne has run so consistently since he started racing 'that he will have to be seriously considered, especially after the way he disposed of the sprinters in the Dunedin Handicap at the Pakuranga meeting, which was his last outing. Lucy Eose, Awaken and Awamutu all showed to advantage in their races at Avondale, Tvliile White Wings is reported to be going well at Takaqjni. The principal selections at present may be Cliromadyne, Awarere, Cerenfonv, Paganelli, Awamutu and Lucy Eose.
