REDUCED EXPORTS.
UNDER £2,000,000 IN AUGUST
SECOND OCCASION SINCE WAR
TRADE BALANCE LESS.
The value'of exports from New Zealand in August, according to the Customs returns, was £1,891,632, which means that for the second time since the war the August return has been less than £2,000,000. In 1923 the exports were valued at £1,806,903. Since then only one month, October, 1926 ( £1,673,257) has been below two millions. Delay in the shipment of produce and disturbance in the flow of imports .owing to the tariff revision have affected the trade returns. A comparison for the three months June, July and August is as follows:— June-Aug. 1930. 1929. Decrease. £ £ £ TCvnorts .. 9,017,685 9,438,469 420,784 toportl Vlfem 12,160,017 1,686,246 Excess • 1,456,086 2,721,548 1,265,462 During the first five months of this year there was a reduction in the recorded value of exports of £7,600,000, as compared with an increase in imports of £51,000. In the following three months, the reduction of exports has been increased to over £8,000,000, but there has now been a substantial reduction in imports, so that the apparent favourable balance compares more favourably with last year than it did at the end of May. The returns for eight months of recent years are as follows: Jan,-Aug. Exports. Imports. Excess. £ £ £ 1925 . 42,955,713 34,01G,926 8,938,787 1926 . 34,946,188 32,269,049 2,677,139 - 1927 . 35,782,695 29,105,373 0,677,322 1928 . 43,076,394 28,893,753 14,182,641 19"9 . 43,072,236 31,272,095 11,800,141 1930 . 35,057,065 29,637,230 5,419,835 In the last four months of 1929 there was an excess of imports of over £5,000,000, so that unless imports are reduced to a greater extent than the fall in exports during the rest of this year, the returns for the twelve months will show an unfavourable balance.
