RETAIL TRADE INDEX.
BANK OF ENGLAND ACTS. LONDON", September 25. The Bank of England announces an important' innovation, namely, that of co-operating with the Incorporated Association of Retail Distributors in order to secure reliable information about the state of trade and the cost of living. The proprietors of 100 departmental stores scattered over 60 towns in England have agreed to furnish the bank with monthly returns of their retail prices compared with those ,of the corresponding month of the previous year, together with the .stock held. The -next stage will be the calculation of a retail trade index by the bank, .. . The'first joint report issued by the bank and. the association- shows that prices were lower in .August and trade less—eigns of reduced purchasing power on the part of the public, especially the leisured classes.. . .
