BIRKENHEAD BUSES.

PROPOSED NEW SERVICE.

APPLICATION REFUSED

The application of the Marine Suburbs Bus Company, Ltd., for authority to establish a bus service from Highbury Corner, Birkenhead, to Northcote wharf was refused by the No. 2 Licensing Authority yesterday.

The application was opposed by the Birkenhead Borough Council, for which Mr.' Vallance appeared, the Waitemata Bus and Transport Company, Limited, Blue Star Motor Services, Limited, and Messrs. T. Halliday, J. H. Lynch and L. L. Purdy, for all of whom Mr. Hubble appeared, Applicant was represented by Mr. Aldcrton. Mr. H. J. C. George, a" member of the Northcote Borough Council, appeared on behalf of his council. The Mayor of Birkenhcad, Mr. J. P. McPhail, stated that traffic would be wrongly diverted from" Birkenhcad to Northcote if the application were allowed. • In his opinion a service from Highbury to. the Northcote wharf would not be a' convenience to the public. The chairman of the Birkenhead Ratepayers' Association, Mr. John Batty, stated that the association objected to the granting of the license. \ Leslie. John Purdy, a motor bus proprietor, of Birkenhead, and the manager of the Blue Star Motor Service, Pcrcival Thomas, stated that they could stand no further competition.
