OBITUARY.

MRS. MARGARET LEE. The death occurred at the Auckland Public Hospital on September 19 of Mrs. Margaret Lee, at the age of &3. Mrs. Lee, nee Miss Margaret Adam, was born at Dundee, Scotland, in 1837, and came to New Zealand at the age of 18 in the sailing ship Bank of England. Miss Adam was married to Mr. John William Lee in March, 1858, at St. Andrew's Church, Auckland. Her husband, who predeceased her 22 years ago, came to New Zealand from Brighton, England, with the 58th Eegiment.

MRS. SUSAN CAMPBELL.

■ The death of Mrs. Susan Campbell, an old and respected pioneer of Matakana, occurred at Ellerslie on Friday, 19th instant, in her' eighty-fourth year. Mrs. Campbell was born at, Highwickham and came to Queensland in the ship Blenheim in 1857. Soon after she arrived in New Zealand in the boat manned -by Captain Meiklejohn and his sons. For a 'number of years she lived at Big Omaha; In 1866 she was married to Mr. Campbell,' of Matakana, where she lived; for over 60 years. During her long-residence Mrs. Campbell worked for; the good and advancement of .the district, was a keen church worker, and; Her help was ever ready in times of sickness and trouble.. She was often.referred to as the "mother of Matakana." -About;.three years ago she came to live" at Ellerslie. • Mr. Campbell died 27 years ago. Ellerslie; Mrs. J. Morison, of Kaipara Flats; Mr. A. J. K. Campbell, Mr. W. E. Campbell, and Mr. E. Y. Campbell, of Matakana. There are 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

MR. JOHN ROSSITER.

The death at Eingwood, Victoria, Australia, at the advanced age of 94 years, of Mr. John Eossiter, ended the career of a man of great vitality and untiring zeal. Born in London, Mr. Eossiter when 18 years of age went to Hobart in the brig Mary Eowe, the trip occupying 140 days. In 1862 he went across to Victoria, but the lure of the goldfield took him across to Dunedin. He tramped 145 miles to Dunstan in six days and for 12 months had a rough time mining, with minimum results. In company with Messrs. Higgins and Davey, who had the "Dunstan News," he took up journalism. A rush took place sto a goldiield at Hamilton, and Mr. Eossiter went there and staj'ted the "Mount Ida News,' which, like the field, lasted only ten weeks. He then crossed the range with his dray load of printing plant and opened up business in opposition to the "News," at Clyde. This paper, the "Molyneux Mail," was published bi-weekly and distributed free. Another greater attraction presented itself in 1865, in the gold rush to Hokitika, on the West Coast, where there were •soon 25,000 people. On August 8 Mr. Eossiter started the "Hokitika Advertiser." In March, 1866, he sold out to a syndicate and left for Victoria. In 1866 Mr. Eossiter, in company with Mr. Thomas Higgins, started the "Western Press" at Camperdown. In 1871 he •went to Seymour and started the "Goulburn Courier," and in 1873 founded the "Kilmore Standard." Two years later he sold out and started the "Gippsland Standard," which in 1898 was moved to Yarram. Twenty-five years ago Mr. Eossiter retired from business and went to live at Eingwood. He is survived by Mrs. Eossiter, eight sons, and one daughter.

MR. THOMAS O'HALLORAN.

The death occurred suddenly at his home, Campbell Road, Grey Lynn, on September 20 of the well-known veterinary surgeon, Mr. Thomas O'Halloran, at the age of 62 years. He was born in Tasmania, and graduated at Kendall's Veterinary College, which was afterwards incorporated with Melbourne University. He came to Auckland 21 years ago. He had been suffering from ( heart' trouble, but appeared in his usual health on' Saturday when "he attended the race meeting at Avondale. Mrs. O'Halloran survives heir, husband.
