HORSES AT TAKANINI.

WHITE WINGS IMPROVED.

MASHOOH FOR ELLERSLIE

CONDITION OF KING'S SPEECH.

Takanini trainers will shortly begin working their teams before breakfast. Takanini representatives performed well on the opening day of the Avondale meeting, but suffered considerably, owing to weather conditions, on the concluding day. Rosshire was certainly unlucky-on the first day, when he failed to "win the Maiden Plate-by half a head. In the Guineas he was not at home on the heavy track. His pedigree suggested that he should act well in the going, being by Catmint—Lady Penury, but after goW a furlong it was seen he would be hopelessly out of it. T. Calaugher saddled up his first winner since setting up as a trainer here, Envoy being the horse concerned. The victory was well deserved and a very popular one. Like Rosshire, however, he failed to reproduce his previous day's form on Monday. There was one two-year-old that went very well in the Avondale Stakes, the juvenile in question being Royal Artist, who, after hitting the front at the barrier rise, ran a solid race, to fill third place behind King Colossus and Lady Vane. A little improvement on that form should find the son of Leighton—Oddity a source of annoyance in future juvenile engagements. King's Speech returned to the birdcage a lame horse after contesting the Henderson Handicap on Saturday, and C. Morse is very dubious about the gelding recovering. He has exercised extreme patience throughout the preparation of the Demosthenes gelding, and it must be, to I pay the least, rather disappointing to him i for such to happen Avhen in racing trim. As far as King's Speech is concerned it certainly appears that he is '"gone for good." White Wings looks an improved mare as a reseult of Saturday's race and her admirers can be expected to see her landing the big end of a stake very shortly. She was on the course on Monday, but was not aeked to sport silk, owing, no doubt, to the state of the going. Mashoor is being livened up in his work and can be expected to race well at Ellerslie next month. The Lucullus gelding is to be schooled during the week and interest is attached to his movements owing mainly to his engagement on Saturday week. Lord Willonyx is bowling along with plenty of freedom, and it should not be very long before he is asked to sport ;silk. This fellow has made great headway during the last few weeks. Amber Link has been progressing well knd it is expected that the daughter of Tea Tray—Secret Link will be _ racing next month. : Stables are to be erected on H. Gray s property here and the construction of game is due to commence next -week,'' There are to be five boxes built and J.;: Gray will have two horses with which to commence training. They, are Bronze Ea<*le and a youngster by Potoa. • Tamarado is still an absentee from the track, but when seen this week had shown a decided improvement and the Boreness is working off. This filly is very promising and when thoroughly tuned up can be looked to for some good efforts. Gay Cavalier raced a bit green at Avondale, but the outing should prove beneficial on the score of education. Prince Lu'a half-brother is an attractive-looking three-year-old and one that may develop aneed with a little more racing. . by Thespian-Queen o the Ea?th, raced once last season but id not show up in a very promising lighten that occasion. Time has been no.object liiiiss "Snce of Orange may run ovtr a bit of ground.
