WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

HOBSONVILLE. The September meeting of the Hobsonville Women's Institute was held recently in the hall, when Mrs. W. Ocklestcn "presided. The secretary reported that the telephone connection with Henderson exchange was nearing conclusion. Xurse Crozier gave an address on first aid and home nursing. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Miss Ockleston and Miss Armistead. A sale of plants and cuttings was well patronised. EDGECUMBE. The Edgecumbe Women's Institute suet on September 10 at Mrs. Halle residence. Mrs. Ecclee presided. There was a good attendance and four new members were enrolled. Mrs. Colebrook gave a demonstration of raffia work, and presented a pretty cake-basket as prize in a gueesing competition, which was won by Mrs. Mexted. The roll call, "My Pet Superstition," was well responded to and caused much amusement. Afternoon tea was served by Meedames W. G. Gow, Cleaver, Marx and Johneton. KOPUARAHI. The monthly meeting of the Kopuarahi Women's Institute was held at the residence of Mrs. J. C. Miller, who has put her large room at the disposal of the institute. Mesdames Kneebone, Wilkins and Feild were added to the committee. It was decided that in future there be a sales table, so that members can bring anything they have and do not need, but wliieh their sister members may, thereby helping each other and adding to the iiuanees. Much fun was caused by a musical parcel competition, won by Mrs. Fayher. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses —Mesdames H. Boweh, Campbell, Caudy, Flynn, Feild and Heenan. BIRKDALE. Mrs. Gilpin presided at the Women's Institute meeting held in the Public Hall, Birkdale, on Tuesday last. The resignation of Mrs. Wettenhull, the Birkdale Women's Institute first president, who has left Auckland, was accepted with regret. The resolutions for the Dominion Conference to be held in Wellington in October were discussed. Mrs. Coward gave recitations, which were much appreciated. Hostesses were Mrs. Jeffries, Mrs. Jewel and Miss Wood. Mrs. Hughes gave an "At Home" recently in aid of funds. The programme included songs by Mrs. Lee, pianoforte solo and recitation by Miss Margaret Hughes, and competitions. During afternoon tea a discussion on cooking recipes proved helpful. PAEROA. The recently inaugurated Women's Institute held its monthly meeting on the 16th, when Mrs. Turton presided. Thret> new.mcmbers were enrolled. A discussion took place on "How to Make New Garments from Old." Mesdames Gee sold Mettam were appointed a sub-committee in charge of a sewing circle, whose work is to replenish the institute's "kindness kit." Mrs. James gave an interesting demonstration on "How to Make Economy Bath Mats from Old Silk end Lisle Hose." A novel idea, "an information bureau" was instituted and proved a successful innovation. The hostesses were Meedames Gee and Finnie, who served tea. The meeting closed with the hearty einging of the Paeroa Institute song, "Pass It On." PAENGAROA. The members of the Paengaroa Women's Institute found the September meeting specially interesting and attractive. There was a good attendance, and great interest was taken in an exhibition of fancy work. Modern embroidery and ancient "needlework were displayed, some of which dated back to the seventeenth century. A collection of curios was exhibited by the members, one; article at least being 200 years old. The secretary, Miss Cruickshank, gave detailed information regarding thfe annual conference to be held in Wellington in October. She also stressed the point that all institutes should promote rural interests as far as possible as i recommended by the National Federation. Arrangements were made for a potato growing competition. A roll- \ call, "What to make fbr bazaars,"; resulted in some fresh and useful ideas being expressed. Mrs. W. T. Black read \ a paper on the same subject. After tea was served, Mrs. C. Anderson acted as accompanist to Miss Burk, whose renderof "There's a Land" was much enjoyed. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Tait, Philips and i Summers.
