SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

About two'hundred people attended a ■social held by the Western District Fire Station last evening, when dancing was interspersed by enjoyable musical items contributed by Messrs. Hoffey, Keatley, Byrnes and Bellamy, and Misses V. and C.-Pope; ■: . .

The monthly meeting of the Dargaville branch of the women's division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union , was held in the Pluuket rooms when there was a large number of members present. Mrs. WJA. Morgan presided. Mrs. K. F. Griffin, of, Eaupo, gave a demonstration of papier mache work. Mesdames W. A. Morgan, P. W. Hill, G. Druitt, and P. A flag bridge afternoon was give non Saturday by Miss Doreen D'Authreau at her. home, Garden Terrace, Devonport, for Miss Peggy Eedmond, whose marriage, takes place shortly. The Dargayille Croquet Club held the annual meeting under the president, Mrs. W. A. Peterson, who occupied the chair. ' Dr. and Mrs. Tracy Inglis, of Alfred Street, gave a delightful picture and supper party on Tuesday evening, in honour of''their :pnly son, Mr' Kobert Tracy Inglis, attaining his. majority. A special alcovo was decorated at the Civic Theatre for the occasion; "pink stocks and sweet peas being used lavishly for decorations. Mies Marjorie. Inglis acted as hostess, and wore a blue flowered ninon. Among the young guests were: Mre. Bryson, Misses Joan Lusk, Edith Hawke, Myrtle Hawthorn, Nancy Bartley, Joyce Bradburn, Ailsa Perron, Madge Whytc.

An enjoyable- evening was held at the homo of Mrs. Whitehead at "The Ashee," View Road, Mount Eden, last Saturday, in honour of Mrs. Whitehead's birthday, and also to celebrate the reunion, after 15 years, of Mrs. Whitehead with her very old friend, Mrs. Martin, of Eoyal Oak. The sittingroom was daintily decorated with Chinese lanterns, balloons and streamers. The reception hall, used later in the evening for card parties, was bedecked with ferns and palms and coloured lights. The dining room held two large oval tables, where a delightful supper was spread. The evening was passed jovially, the guests wearing fancy hats, using the sitting room for dancing and games. Miss V. Downie gave a fancy dance, accompanied- at the piano by Mr. J. Hunt. Mr. R. H. border gave a violin so.'o. Mrs. Whitehead received the guests' wearing black lace and gold. Mre. Martin wore shot taffeta and lace. Others present were: Mesdames' Forder, Martin, Close, W. H. Thompson, S. Dpull, S. Wilson, C. E. Vail, I. Vail, Gandy, J. Hunt, Gooch, and Misses Gaudy, Dobson, M. Milburn, J. Lyall.

There was a specially good attendance of members of the Mount Eden branch of the Hospital Auxiliary on Tuesday evening, when the monthly meeting was held. Mrs. Potter presided, and the various reports from the committees showed an increase of work and interest. In order to raise funds there will be a

"Bring and Buy Sale" at Mrs. Potter's residence shortly, and a final card evening of the season will be held during the week after. It is hoped that members and friends will support these functions and help the funds in view of Christmas at the hospital and in poor homes.

The Mount Albert "branch of the League of Mothers met in the Presbyterian Church Hall last week. Mrs. Turner presided and Xurse Sauiulcrs Jones, of the St. John's Ambulance, addressed the meeting and gave.an Instructive talk on children's ailments. She also gave a- practical demonstration of bandaging. Mrs. Owens sang two songs charmingly. On behalf of the League of Mothers Mrs. Bailey thanked Xurse Saunders Jones and also' Mrs. Oweni*. Patients of -ward '28 were entertained last evening- at a concert arranged by Mrs. Baeburn, Mr.. F. J. Johnston and Mr. A. Hamblin, of the ; Auckland Hospital .Auxiliary. The'programme was given ■by Miss Lillian ,o'Leary's and Sirs. Boyle's pupils, and the patients were delighted with the delightful programme : provided. ■ Enjoyable items were rendered by Miss Kathleen Boyls, Patricia and Koanui, Miss Joyce Cain, Miss .Wilma Lockwodd, Miss Joy Simon, Miss Gladys Cain, and Mr. J. Simeon. Mrs. Boyle was the accompanist. A vote of thanks was passed to the young people for the very pleasant evening given to the patients.

A social and dance was held by the Public Works Department employees at "The Pines," Orua Bay, on Friday, when there was, a. large attendance of local residents and those from surrounding districts. . The hall was tastefully decorated, and in between the dances musical items were contributed by the following artists: —Songs by Miss L. Watson and Mr. F. George; pianoforte solo, Miss D. Johansson; Maori song, Miss Mary Eeweti. The proceedings were opened by Mr. C. A. Chalkley, and at the conclusion Mr. Aspen, J J. 3 ., thanked the committee for the successful evening. Mr. J. In honour of Miss Garthorpe, one of the original members of the Victoria League in Christchurch, and Mrs. Garfield Bagnall, of Tonga, an enjoyable afternoon tea was held by the members of the Victoria League in their rooms yesterday. Members of the council'of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary gave a morning tea at the Tudor tearooms yesterday to farewell Mrs. E. Ellis, 6eeretary of the Hospital Auxiliary and assistant secretary at the depot, who leayes for Christchurch this week. Tea was served on the balcony, and the tables were beautifully decorated witli bowls of golden daffodils, which were set on green tablecloths with distinctive effect, while hanging baskets of ferns added further to the charm of the surroundings. Mrs. Ellis was presented by Mrs. Alfred Kidd, on behalf of the Hospital Auxiliary, with a cheque. Mrs. Kidd spoke most appreciatively of the work Mrs". Ellis had done for the organisation, and expressed regret at her departure. The Holy Trinity Social Club, Otahuliu, and the Bombay, Literary and Debating Society were the guests of the Pukekohe Literary and Social Club at a social evening, held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Pukekohe, when there was an attendance of over 300. The club orchestra played the dance music. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss 8.
