"LEVY INIQUITOUS."
UNEMPLOYMENT LEGISLATION TRADES' COUNCIL HOSTILE. The Auckland Trades and Labour Council lias considered the Unemployment Bill at present before the Legislative Council, and i≤ opposed to it for the reasons: —(1) That it is economically unsound in principle; (2) that the unemployment levy or poll tax is iniquitous, because the workers will have to provide the bulk of the money to pay the sustenance allowances and provide relief 1 works and thereby place a burden upon the shoulders of the people it is proposed to relieve; (3) that the restrictions placed upon sustenance allowances make it almost impossible for workers to participate in its 'alleged benefits; (4) that the authority vested in the Unemployment Board will abrogate the provisions of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, and also ixndermine the foundations and principles of industrial awards and agreements; (5) that the bill does not make any provision for unemployment assistance to female workers; (6) that it makes no provision for insurance against unemployment; and (7) that it is indefinite in man? instances and leaves a large number "of its provisions to.be made by regulations by Order-in-Council.
