AVONDALE BRICK WORKS.

PROPOSED NEW FACTORY.

OPPOSED BY ENGINEER.

An application received by the City .Council last; evening ' for permission to erect brick and tile works - at ", Avondale South was opposed by the.city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler,»on the grounds that the site of the proposed factory, at the. intersection of Taylor and Matai Streets, is in a residential locality. V-

The applicant's solicitors submitted that the land upon which it was proposed to erect the works was totally , unsuited to the' erection of dwellings. The land was the only part in the surrounding district containing clay suitable for brick-making, except land , that was already being worked; The applicants intended to use electricity wherever possible and the smoke from the kilns would not constitute a nuisance. /• K

If the progress of the-metropolitan area was maintained, the city. engineer said, the district wooild be developed! as a residential area and he considered it 'was not desirable . to permit digging' operations at widely distributed points. While the encouragement of . local industry was desirable he: considered it would be unwise to permit any work that would jeopardise the future of the district.

The recommendation of the Town Planning Committee was that the application be granted,, provided no industrial buildings were erected closer, than 80ft from either street and, that any excavations carried out on the land within 80ft from the alignment of either street rbe filled in to the street level On completion of the work. • For the due performahce.of these provisions a bond of fSOO was required. * , -v On the motion of Mr. G. W. Hutchison, the recommendation was referred back to the committee for further negotiation concerning the bond.
