FOR HOSPITAL PATIENTS?

PETITION TO PARLIAMENT. ELEVEN SHOPKEEPERS FINED. • Eleven ■ prosecutions • for • selling and exposing goods for sale on Sunday were brought before Mr. F. -K. Hunt, S.M., in the: Police Court this morning. Florence Cunningham and her husband, ' Patrick • Cunningham, were charged with both selling and exposing goods at their shop in Park Road. Mr. Blomfield, who appeared for defendants, said that three shops, opposite the Auckland Hospital, were affected. Defendants had opened their shop only during visiting hours at the hospital. On each occasion defendant had asked his customer whether the goods were for patients in the hospital, and had been assured that they were.

Counsel produced a petition signed by 200 patients in th<3 hospital'asking that some provision .be made for the sale of goods on Sundays to be taken to the hospital. The Magistrate: The Hospital Board should start a shop of their own. "The police have been trying to suppress Sunday trading," said Subinspector Shanahan. "A number of shops have been opeiav flouting the law. I have been instructed to ask for a substantial penalty, and for the full penalty if the defendants come before the court a second time." Mr. Blomfield: The. goods sold were for patients in the hospital. Mr. Hunt: Yes, and for profit. for himself. A great deal of this fruit goes into the park, and not into the hospital. Mr. Blomfield said that he had pleaded guilty for the purpose of making the facts generally known. The petition was to be forwarded to Parliament.

Florence Cunningham was fined £1 and costs for selling goods and 10/ and costs for exposing goods for sale, and Cunningham was fined £1 and costs 10/.
